Professor Robert Medcalf is the Head of the Molecular Neurotrauma and Haemostasis laboratory at the Alfred Hospital located within the Central Clinical School of the faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. His research activities focus on the host response and new treatment for patients with traumatic brain injury and ischaemic stroke.
Professor Medcalf obtained his Ph.D. in 1984 at the University of Melbourne. He undertook an extended post-doctoral training position at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, before returning to Monash University in Melbourne as an RD Wright Fellow in 1993. Professor Medcalf has obtained continuous NHMRC support for his research programs since 1993. Professor Medcalf served two terms as Chairman of the International Society on Fibrinolysis and Proteolysis (ISFP) and is currently Secretary of the ISFP. He was awarded the International ISFP prize for this contributions to the field in 2016 and it the 2023 recipient of the Stroke Society of Australia Excellence award. Prof Medcalf is also Editor-in-Chief of the “Thrombosis Journal”.
